Rush Limbaugh invokes Gestapo and Brownshirts to defend Prejean

Time to get a new analogy, Rush!Head of the Republican party Rush Limbaugh has invoked the Gestapo and the Brownshirts when describing how liberals reacted when beauty pageant contestant Carrie Prejean endorsed a traditional, conservative view of marriage.

We’re supposed to tolerate all the perversion of all the radicals, all the politicians on the left. We’re supposed to tolerate and be understanding of all of the godlessness. We’re supposed to tolerate it. We’re supposed to be understanding of all of the destructive things these people do — and then when we stand up and just express our beliefs? Wow! It gets time to get the Gestapo. It’s time to get the secret police, time to go get the brownshirts and shut us up.

It’s an interesting line of thought The Fat One offers here. He says that we (conservatives) are “supposed to tolerate and be understanding” of all of the perversions. But when we, the conservatives actually express our own beliefs, out come the brownshirts and the Gestapo! Of course Rush can’t actually say that those conservatives ARE tolerant  and understanding, just that they are SUPPOSED to be. And then those damn liberals have to go and not play by the same rules.

Rush’s conservatives should not earn brownie points because they are SUPPOSED to be tolerant; they should earn them for actually being tolerant. It’s at that point that I’d feel sorry for the conservatives in question if someone attacks them for a statement they made.

But I digress. The point to this blog is to highlight inappropriate analogies to Hitler, etc. The Fat One’s most recent example is garden-variety Rush; he doesn’t bother to qualify or explain his analogy in any way. He just simply lays out the liberal Gestapo and Brownshirts, as if they were a generally understand and accepted part of the liberal framework.

Of course they are not, any more than there was a conservative Gestapo or Brownshirts during the Bush regime. Time to get another analogy Rush!
